WASHINGTON (AP) _ Gun control proponents scored a rare victory

today as the Senate rejected the carrying of concealed weapons

across state lines.

The 58-39 vote defeated a measure giving people with concealed

weapons permits the right to carry their firearms into other states

that have similar gun laws. Sixty votes were needed to approve the

provision, an amendment to a defense spending bill.

It's an unusual setback for the gun rights side, which has been

able to muster majorities of Republicans and pro-gun Democrats to

move its agenda through both the Bush and Obama administrations.

Opponents say the concealed weapon proposal would force states with

tough gun laws to accept gun-carrying visitors from states with

weaker laws.

South Dakota Sen. John Thune sponsored the measure. He said it

would not provide for a national carry permit, and that a visitor

to another state would have to obey the limitations of that state,

such as bans on concealed weapons in restaurants or other places.

way to get the quick follow up muley,  sad day for the men and women who carry... the coalition to prevent gun violence had to be happy after that one, they sent their newsletters updates out reguarding thier "victory" less than 25 minutes after the votes were counted. nothing like opening your e-mail to see that kind of "news" to ruin a decent say. but like i had mentioned in the original thread, that bill did have some loose ends that people like senator Helmke are going to unravel quick faster and in a hurry. i think we can expect to see another similar bill in the future, hopefully the guys on our side spend a bit more time on it though so its more direct and better prepared.
