So, here is some pics of my deer from 2day. He is a nice 5 point. I didn't have to track him very far, but I let him sit for 15 minutes, before we went and looked. I'm really thankful for the veteran of us, cause man, can he track a deer!. This boy came thru at 35 yards from me, and I had the 1st round buckshot, and the other 4 Federal Premium 2 3/4" true-ball slugs. The gun functioned flawlessly, after last night, and a gunsmithing file set, and lots of carb cleaner. I completely missed him with the buckshot, which I wouldn't believe it, if I didn't see it with my own eyes when we processed it. But I got him on a full run, the damn buckshot seriously made him run fast. My buddy had gave me some good advice about leading a running deer, about 3/4 of a deer in front of it. I hit him with round #5, and he was about 70 yards away. The shot hit him in the rear of the vitals, as you can see the exit wound in the one pic. We tracked him for only about 150 yards, not a whole crap load of blood, but it was almost waist high on one branch, so I knew he was done for. I told my buddy's that I had 4 hours left of sunlight, and I was staying 'til I found him. I wasn't letting 11 horns go down without some venison. We found him laying down, head up, and wanting to be finished off. I just got home from processing him.

I am counting that little point though, that's rite under the tag. I heard from an oldtimer, that if you can hang a ring on it, then it's a point. Sounded good to me! LOL

Thanks Joe, and Xbow! I have decided though. No more damn buckshot for me. If I can hit this one on a full run with slugs, then I can probably do it again. I'll save the rest of what I got for the yotes.

when i used a smooth barrel, my first round was a slug, thinking you will more likely have the element of suprise and be able to take you time with the first shot. then I switched buck for one and followed with three slug.....not saying you are wrong, just the way I did it.

I know Kipp! It seems like every scenario is different almost. I had in all buckshot, the day b4. The 6 point that I drew blood on, would have dropped if I would have had a couple slugs in it. He was moving slow, and away from me, at about 75 yards. I put all 3 rounds of buckshot I had at him, but he didn't stop. I had sighted it in at 50 yards with slugs, so, I bet I would have hit him. But it worked out the next day. I know my buddy seen the 6 point before I did, and he says it was an 8. I always seem to have the wrong gun, or wrong ammo, almost everytime.

WOW I have seen buckshot go out as far as 80+ yards. BUt a slug is also hard to beat. Nice looking deer, I would take them anyway I can get them. I'll bet it was good with the biscuts and gravy.LOL
