I finally got out last week. I went to one of the ranches I have permission on and set up for my first stand. The first stand produced nothing. Then I drove about 1/2 mile North/East and parked my truck. I walked about 1/2 mile west along some almond trees towards a large field. About 300 yards to the north of me was a dry creek bottom and figured it to be a perfect place for a coyote to bed. I set up against a fencepost, facing the creek bottom. After my first series, I look over my shoulder to see a coyote coming in behind me. She was about 175 yards out and she spotted a mouse and started chasing it.
That gave me my chance to turn. I was in full camo including face net and my rifle was camo'd. (I think this is the only reason she let me turn). She would chase the mouse, look up at me, chase the mouse, look up at me. By the time I got her in the scope, she was facing me, looking right at me. I started to squeeze the trigger and she turned broadside, ready to bolt. As the rifle went off I heard a loud, high-pitched "whack".
I was shooting my .243 Remington with handloaded 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tips. They are not my bullet of choice, but that is another story.
After I recovered from recoil, I saw all four of her legs in the air...Then her head popped up and she started doing the "cockroach" flipping and flopping all over the place. I had lost the last coyote I'd shot (thinking it was a good hit) so I tried to sneak another bullet through the long grass, but missed. I ended up spining her on the first shot and walked to within 20 yards of her and put her down for good.
The spine shot was horrendous!!! The wound was probably 8 inches long and 4 inches across. These bullets are not fur friendly. Even the neck shot at 20 yards left a pretty big hole.
Graphic Pics? Where all I see is a small picture with a little brown and a whole LOTTA red WTG on the yote anyway to make the picture bigger for viewing?
Damn near skinned it with the shot! Those bullets are moving about 4,100fps and they do a lot of damage when they hit bone. This is the second one that looked just like this. The first one was asleep, curled up in a ball and I hit her in the neck at about the same range (175+- yards).

Now with the lead ban in parts of my area I have a limited choice in bullets. THE NOSLER 55GR 6MM BALLISTIC TIP IS NOT LEAD FREE. Just for clarity. It sounds like Barnes Bullets, Inc. had a big to do with the lead ban in California stating that their bullets are comparably priced to cup/core bullets. If you consider 3X's the cost for 1/2 the bullets comparably priced, then I guess they are right.
My buddy has had good luck (for accuracy) with the Hornaday GMX bullets. I've had good luck with the Nosler E-Tip (both are non-lead) Although the E-Tips takes some tinkering while loading that most others don't need.
This coyote I took outside of the lead ban area, but I have loaded some 6mm 80gr GMX's that, if accurate, I will probably hunt with exclusively.
