HCH and I are planning a bear hunt in MN this fall.  He has already done this a few times.  It will be my first time.  My bow is only a 50 pound and my draw length is only 25, so even with it maxed out it will not be at 50 pounds.  I was wondering if you all thought this would be enough weight to take down a bear?

good luck

Hoytgirl,

If hunting at bait, you will have lots of time. when the bear is quartering away and has front leg ahead...through the ribs...out the brisket...straight through engineroom.
Mine is set at 52lb and worked like a charm at 27yds from 20ft up.
the fwd shoulderblade on a bbear is l like a piece of armour and larger than a deers.
My bow dealer/outfitter says "if I'm not nervous handling a broadhead, it isn't sharp enuff".....
Shot placement is very important with bears as they don't seem to leave and easy trail and can travel a longway fast.

Good luck and look fwd to the "after" pics.

i agree with the rest of the guys here hoytgirl. if yer a lil apprehensive, just try to get a shot with 15-20yds. that poundage will most likely blow at least 1/2 way through him. we had some vitals pic's of a few critters around a while ago, i'll see if i can find them and bump them up for you to study with.

Sometimes women like to hear from other people besides the husband. Like I told her, if my little 11 year old boy can blow completely through a deer with a 35# setup ,hers will do just fine. She will use a muzzy 3 blade fixed.

I do value and trust HCH's advice and wisdom, just thought it would be interesting and educational to hear others as well.  And yes, I use carbons. :)

I would say stay away from Mechanical Broadheads with light poundage on Bear, you won't get the penatration you need. Just go with a sharp 3 blade, and watch out for the front shoulder.
Good luck,  i am sure it will be a hunt you will never forget.

Hoytgirl,
You should have no problem at 50#, I used a traditional bow with heavy wooden arrows & a snuffer broad head & got a pass through. Its all about placement! Just stay
behind the shoulder blade & hit him in the pocket book, your sure to hear the death moan!  Good Luck!

When/where are you hunting H girl?
Here in Nova Scotia we can't hunt until Sept. 11.
I just got word tonight from Orion's Mistress that one of my baits was hit that we set last Sunday...I'm away at work....unfortunately the cam on it didn't fire...grrr, but will be back out and ready tommorrow.
