Riding the Storm in Memory of Jaylee

Riding the Storm in Memory of Jaylee

This fishing trip was in memory of Jaylee Hofmeister who was 16 years old and had been diagnosed with Fibrod Mixed Sarcoma. Jaylee had gone on a deep sea fishing trip with “A Hunt Above” in the past. His story can be read on our web site http://www.ahuntabove.org. We are sad to say that Jaylee lost his battle with cancer and earned his angel wings on June 10, 2009 at the age of 16. Please be in prayer for his family as they go through this difficult time.

“A Hunt Above” received an application from a boy named Zach.
Zach wanted to go on a deep sea fishing trip. A little about Zach: He was born with bilateral hydronephrosis. Bilateral hydronephrosis is the enlargement (distention) of the urine collecting structures and pelvis of both kidneys. Bilateral means both sides. He lost his right kidney at 2 months old. In his lifetime he's had over
40 procedures. He had an auto-transplant at the age of 13. He will need a regular transplant at some point. He is an awesome kid. His spirit doesn't seem to falter very often. He is now 17. He only has 1 kidney with decreased function.

Meet Zach:

Now with the details of the trip:

Randy Arfele, Co-Director of “A Hunt Above”, his son Justin, and contributor Tony Powell picked up Zach and Dana Lonsinger (Zach’s mom) at Houston Hobby Airport in the evening time and headed to Galveston, TX. for a deep sea fishing trip that was scheduled for the next day. After settling into their rooms at the Commodore Hotel, they met up with Director of “A Hunt Above”, Mike Macko, and rested for the fishing trip the next day.

Forecasted prior to arrival was that hurricane Alex, which was lurking in the Gulf of Mexico, and was to make landfall along the Texas coastline just south of our location. The next morning we were awakened to strong winds and clouds and an occasional rain shower, but after contacting the boat captain, pressed on to the meeting place to board the boat and begin fishing. After an hour long, semi-rough ride, we began trolling offshore in hopes of luring a fish onto the end of a line. Sadly to say, the waves were up a little too high due to the storm, and we were unable to find any takers on either trolling rod. We then headed back into the sheltered bay, where we found several protected inlets and rock dikes to fish around, where Zach was able to hook and land several fish, including a black tip shark.

We returned to the hotel, with exciting stories of the day’s events, and rested that night with the song of the wind, and the chorus of rainfall lulling everyone to sleep. The next morning began a fun filled day, with a tour of the historical district of the Island, lunch at Rainforest Café, and a ride on the Bolivar Ferry.

After another nights rest, the morning found us touring the San Jacinta Monument in La Porte (Houston), Texas, and then traveling back to the airport for their return trip home.

We would like to thank “The Commodore on the Beach” http://www.commodoreonthebeach.com/ in Galveston, TX. for providing Zach and his mom a room at no charge.

“A Hunt Above” would like to thank Gina Russell from Academy of Hair Design http://academyofhair.com/ in Jackson, MS. for providing funding for the airline tickets for Zach and his mom to fly to Houston, TX. Also we would like to thank Mike Hillman owner of Galveston Adventures Guide Service http://www.galvestontxfishing.com/FishingTrips.htm
for providing this trip. Please be in prayer for Zach as he continues to deal with his illness. Also be in prayer for Jaylee’s family as they deal with the loss of their loved one.

We at "A Hunt Above" had a chance to take a young lady on her "Dream Wish" of a deep-sea fishing trip. You all meet Taylor.

Taylor enjoys riding her 2 horses, playing video games, raising her 3 goats and watching TV.
Taylor is 17 years old and has been diagnosed with Desmoplastic Small Round Cell Tumor. Desmoplastic small round cell tumor is classified as a soft tissue sarcoma. It is an aggressive and rare tumor that primarily occurs as masses in the abdomen. There are few early warning signs that a patient has a desmoplastic small round cell tumor. Patients are often young and healthy as the tumors grow and spread uninhibited within the abdominal cavity. These are rare tumors and symptoms are often misdiagnosed by family physicians. The abdominal masses can grow to enormous size before being noticed by the patient. The tumors can be felt as hard, round masses by palpating the abdomen.
We were joined on this trip by Taylor's mom Kendra, her brother Koby, sister Klarissa, and her niece Kambrie. Taylor's father died when she was only 6 years old. "A Hunt Above" had their Director Mike Macko and Co-Director Randy Arfele on this trip as well.

Taylor had high hopes on catching a shark when she went fishing with "A Hunt Above". But, the weather was a factor and we dodged storms for most of the day. Captain Damon McKnight of Super Strike Charters (http://www.superstrikecharters.com/) did a superior job on keeping us dry. Captain Damon deck hand Jay also helped Taylor and her family be as comfortable as possible and was there to assist in any way. When we left the dock we took these two pictures and took it as a sign for the day. It proved to be a good day, as we did not get rained on the whole time we were out.

It wasn't long when Captain Damon got us on some fish. He told us that the triple tail were biting good and with these weather conditions we would go after them. He also told us we would have a chance with some cobia. Taylor caught the first fish and it was a triple tail. She said that it was a strong fighter. Here's her catching her first saltwater fish.

She was so excited to be out there fishing and not worrying about the upcoming surgeries and her cancer.

Her mom and brother also enjoyed their time with her. They also got in on the action and both caught some fish.

We ended up catching 10 triple tails and one cobia.

We returned to the Venice Inn and took a long nap before going to dinner. At dinner we talked about Taylor's horses and goats and about her life. We were able to talk about God's Grace and found out that Taylor was Saved just recently. We all prayed for Taylor's health and for her family.

Taylor has had chemo and is currently in NewYork (week of September 21st) having surgery to try to help her recover from this cancer. Please remember her in your prayers. You can keep up with Taylor’s progress on her Caring Bridge site at http://www.caringbridge.org/visit/taylorhargrove/journal/1

We would like to thank all the individuals who contributed to make this trip happen for Taylor.

We would like to thank Venice Inn (http://www.rodnreel.com/veniceinn/index.asp) for providing lodging for Taylor and her family.
We would also like to thank Captain Damon McKnight of Super Strike Charters (http://www.superstrikecharters.com/) for providing this trip for Taylor and "A Hunt Above".

Deep Sea Fishing Trip in Memory of Seth Harris

"A Hunt Above" Deep Sea Fishing Trip in Memory of Seth Harris

We at "A Hunt Above" took Jordan D'Avy on a deep sea fishing trip on June, 22, 2009.
Jordan was diagnosed in January 2008 with Aggressive B-Cell Lymphoma. Jordan is in remission at this time. Jordan was friends with Seth.

Seth was an outdoorsman and loved everything about the outdoors. Seth died from complications of VOD (Veno Occlusive Disease) caused by the high dose chemo and radiation he received before transplant. He earned his Angel Wings at 11:41 a.m. Sunday morning May, 31, 2009 at the age of 12. We took Seth on two hunting ventures, one being a hog hunt in Texas and the other a deer hunt in Mississippi.

When Jordan was going through chemo he would not leave his room at the hospital. Jordan told us that he loved his room at the hospital and that it was Seth who got him out of the room and to open up with other people. Jordan and Seth both loved the outdoors; hunting, fishing and riding four wheelers. They became friends from that day on. I ask Jordan to describe Seth in one word. Jordan said "There's no way I can describe Seth in one word. Seth was strong, caring for others before himself, and a dear friend."

We at "A Hunt Above" were honored to take Jordan to Biloxi, MS. for this fishing trip. Island Breeze Fishing Charters (http://www.islandbreezecharters.com) operated in Biloxi, MS and ran by Captain Roy Holliman was gracious enough to donate this trip. We also found out that Captain Roy was a cancer survivor.

Meet Jordan:

Jordan, Thomas his brother, Aaron a friend, Chuck Bagwell ("A Hunt Above") and myself (Mike Macko Director for "A Hunt Above") met Captain Roy at his boat early Monday morning. After loading the boat and meeting and greeting we were on our way. Today's target catch was Redfish, King Mackerel and Spanish Mackerel. After an hour or so ride we put out our trolling rigs. It wasn't long when Jordan caught his first ever saltwater fish. It was a nice King Mackerel.
We continued trolling and ended up catching around 24 fish. Most of the fish we caught were Jack Carvelles and we threw them back as they were not a good eating fish. They did put up a good fight though. Jordan ended up bringing home King Mackerels, Spanish Mackerels and Red Snapper. We never did get on the Redfish, but when we caught the Red Snappers it was a surprise to all on the boat, as we were only in 11 feet of water. We also managed to catch a sting ray as well.

We would like to thank Captain Roy Holliman and his staff for a very enjoyable time.
Roy Holliman
Island Breeze Charters
16405 Allie Byrd Road, Ocean Springs MS 39565
Phone: 228-392-8629 Cell: 228-860-3971
http://www.islandbreezecharters.com

We also would like to thank Chad and Dawn Harris for letting us do this trip in memory of their son Seth. We will continue praying for Seth's family and for Jordan to continue in his remission and to continue to be cancer free.

Here is some pictures of the trip:

Looks like I need to get Jordan an "A Hunt Above" t-shirt to wear next time. Jordan had just received his Make-A-Wish dream last month, which was a wood working shop as Jordan loves to build things.

May God Bless,
