Yep, Cabelas had these bad boys on sale for $599. Entry level obviously. But by the time it's done, there won't be a whole lotta original parts on it anyways. Tuesday according to FedEx, I will have my NEW ATN second generation NV riflescope as well. This should be the best setup I've ever had.

As usual, I hit one last night about midnight. I was using my NV setup, with 32 grain hyoer velocity segmented hollow points. I hit him very well, and have been tracking him since this morning. Taxidermist said 48 max to get a mount done, because of that blue belly stuff. Going rite now to get a blood tracker light, and see if I can pick up, where I left off. I'm thinkin he backtracked though. I'll kepp ya posted.

Technical jargen I had to find out the hard way

So, after quite a few nights, with no yotes coming within range of me, I think I figured out the problem. Well Coyotes can see in a very broad spectrum of light. Their nightvision isn't very good, but they can see infrared, very well infrared also. So, it was so dark lately that I needed to use my infrared illuminator on my NV scope. Come to find out, I have basically been shining a flashlight on them. The wavelength of the illuminator I have, which came on my NV is 450nm. For yotes, I need at least 860, or even 940nm, just to make sure. These numbers are refering to the length of the wavelengths of light. So in Laymans terms, the infrared illiminator I have is too bright for them, and they can see it, like a low powered flashlight. Which seems kinda stupid if ya ask me. Because when I bought the NV, on the description picture is a coyote, seen thru the scope, with the reticle on his vitals. Then I looked thru the paperwork for it, and it said it was a "free illiminator with ur NV riflescope, is included, to see in total darkness"

SD prairie dog shooting went excellent

So, we got to SD for the family vacation. We went and seen Mt. Rushmore, and the Badlands, and all the other family stuff. I stopped at one ranch, and asked about doggin. The guy was very friendly, and was more than happy to let us hunt. The last time I went out there, was late in the season, and the dogs were really shot up on the National Grasslands. This time they were everywhere! Non stop shooting. I was amazed at the number of them. The great part was that only about 10 were killed beyond 300 yards. The rest were under. Me and my son, (with the family in the van) sat there for 6 hours. I killed over 100 dogs. The .204 40 grain Hornady V-Max were the coolest ever! About 40% of the hits would send the little things soaring in the air, flipping around in the air. It was GREAT! I had used a .223 55 grain V-Max on my last shoot, and only one came off the ground. The .204 was sooo much fun, that even if they were under 100 yards, I used it. I had a .17 HMR that was supposed to be used for under 200. But it just wasn't as fun. I will be buying another .204 for next time. Then I won't have to wait so long for only one gun to cool down. I gotta say, I have watched some varmint videos before with prairie dogs, and this was like that, or better. This was the most fun BY FAR, I have ever had shooting. Highly recommend

So, the past two nights I have had to shoot raccoons. They are getting in my trash, and eating the outside cat's food. Every year I have to shoot something like this. One year it was opossums, woodchuks too of course. Last year I had to shoot a momma coon, and 4 babies that were living in a pine tree that actually touches my house. Anyone else have this sorta issue? I live in the country obviously. My neighbors never say a word either. I have shot a .410. 3 shots thru it at 3:00 a.m. I guess they knew what it was the next morning, when there was two of the coons laying dead in the road across from my trash cans.
Woodchuk contest anyone?

I'm trying to make things more interesting for some varmints! I'm thinkin a woodchuk contest. BUT have a nice trophy as the prize! The problem is, participation. I was thinking of a $5 entry fee. How does this sound? The seaon would have to be something along the lines of May 1st, til october 1st? Well, if anyone is interested we can go from there. I like trophies. Maybe I'm just weird like that. I dragrace fourwheelers, and came to love them there trophies. I hav 13 from racing. I like the fact of keeping something, instead of $, or a prize that just gets broken, or lost, or whatever over time. I'm sure my kids will be fighting over who gets my trophies hwen I'm gone too. But anyways, I love shootin me some woodchuks, and I do pretty well at it. So, if ya wanna participate in this, then maybe we can have trophies, and contests like this for other species too. This would be a trial and error thing. Trophies aren't free obviously, so hence the $5 entry fee, to cover the trophy, and shipping. Hopefully this will go over well, and we can have one for deer, turkey, hogs, and whatver else. Thank you

First Chuk of the season!

SO, Friday morning I went out down my road where I have seen this big chuk every day or so. I got decked out with my leafywear, and everything. The sun was really hot though, and I could not find any shade where I could also get a shot at him. SO, I decided to try a little callin for yotes. No luck there obviously. WHen I came back up to where I should have been able to see the chuk, I saw a squirrel eating something, and standing up watching me. I got into my spot, and sat there. About 5 minutes later, I seen some movement very close to me, and almost didn't even bother looking towards it, because I figured it was just the squirrel. Well, needless to say, it was my woodchuk, and he was about 10 yards from me. When I seen him look away, I quickly reached forward on my scope, and turned down the parallax setting as far as I could with one turn. I seen him plain as day, going to climb a nice size maple tree. Well, needless to say, that woodchuk never made it up that tree, and I never seen the squirrel again, and have no idea where he went. BUT the woodchuk went in a trash bag, and off to the local taxadermist! I do however need to make a mental note: If I ever have to shoot a woodchuk at 10 yards again with a .17 HMR, make sure you have a trash bag handy. If not, you're in for a SERIOUS mess!
